Animal Medical Hospital President Richard Murray Coe

Dr. Richard Murray Coe is the Co-owner and President of Animal Medical Hospital & Urgent Care in Charlotte, North Carolina—one of the largest and most respected general veterinary practices in the Southeast. With a career spanning over four decades, Dr. Coe is recognized for his leadership in veterinary medicine, innovative hospital management, and commitment to 24-hour pet care.

Originally pursuing a business degree at Samford University, Dr. Coe shifted his focus to animal health after working in the oil industry. He earned his Animal Science degree and Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University, setting the foundation for a lifelong dedication to veterinary excellence.

In 1983, Dr. Coe and his wife, Dr. Susan Coe, founded Animal Medical Hospital in a renovated home. Under their leadership, the hospital expanded into a custom-built, award-winning facility, offering 24/7 emergency care, advanced medical technology, and a robust veterinary internship program. The hospital was an early adopter of electronic medical records and continues to lead in veterinary innovation and staff development.

Even after retiring from clinical practice, Dr. Coe remains actively involved in hospital operations, focusing on business strategy, team growth, and client service. He is a member of the Veterinary Management Group and regularly attends national veterinary conferences.

Outside of work, Dr. Coe is a lifelong learner and former competitive weightlifter featured in the book Pumping Iron. He enjoys SEC football, exploring new restaurants, and traveling—especially his annual birthday trip to New Orleans. He shares his home with three Cavalier King Charles Spaniels: Lola, Gus, and Georgia.
